The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #11-122016

Matthew 1:9
9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;

As we continue our study in Matthew 1, we get a view of leaders positioned over the people of Israel.
Some walked with great faith and obedient service, some obedient in most ways and some who did evil in the sight of God for most if not all their Rule. I want all of us to focus on how well these kings prospered and were blessed, when and while they walked in faith and obedience. Also how much they suffered and caused suffering, when they turned away.
Do you think Matthew is giving us one example after another for us to examine?
Do you think he is writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, God himself for our edification?
Too often, (and I've said this before), we look at these scriptures as something that happened long ago and they have no bearing on any of us.
Oh but how, wrong that kind of thinking really is.
There is nothing in the Holy Scriptures that is not there for our good!
 Romans 8:28
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Get a handle on this folks!    ALL things!  And it starts with the Holy Scriptures!
We need to look at each and every person in the word of God and their relationship with God as well as the outcome of that relationship! It is a history book that applies every lesson to us!

9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;

Uzziah begat Jotham
2 Chronicles 27:6
6 So Jotham became mighty, because he prepared his ways before the LORD his God.
Oh, that says it all folks! Do you see the reciprocating action at work here?
Jotham put his faith in God, God increased his faith. Jotham put his faith into action and God increased him to have more to work with.
Luke 6:38
38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
Giving your life to Jesus is giving your life for others, for Him. When you become wise in the Word of God, you put your faith in the Word to work. The work you will do will not be in your own strength but in God's, through His Holy Spirit in you. You see when you set your face to believe and serve, God will open doors and clear paths and give you exceedingly, abundantly more than is necessary to walk and work for His glory.
Someone will say "Well Pastor, I'm not a king and I don't have the responsibilities these men had, so it really doesn't apply. As long as I mind my own business and walk the straight and narrow, I'm doing what I'm called to do."
Really?---------Really!?
Is that what Jesus did for you??????
Is that what you are called to do for Him????
I dare say Not!
You are as much royalty in the sight of God as any of these kings and furthermore a self-centered and self-righteousness attitude, is a sure ticket to Hell.
OH the Pastor said Hell in Church!
Yes I did, and it's high time everyone figures out that eternity is real! Just as real as Heaven and Hell!
And we all need to be studying the lives of these chosen people to know right from wrong and to do right from wrong and to---- prepare our ways before the LORD our God.
What does that mean? Just exactly what we are doing right here and know!
We are learning by the Word of God, that we may not only make correct decisions when needed but to plan to make correct decisions in our lives for the glory of God.
We are the rulers of our lives. We make choices every day and every moment that will affect us now and forever. Most of the time our choices will have an effect on others. Our spouses, our children, our friends and yes even our enemies.
Get a handle on this folks!
You do not live for yourself. You live in Christ for everyone else just as He lived and died and rose again for everyone else! Pour yourself into the Word of God and then pour yourself out as a drink offering for the LORD!
Joshua 1:8
8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

We are here to learn to do according to all that is written in the Holy Scriptures. To learn right from wrong. To understand the cause of blessing and cursing. To grow in faith and apply that faith in our walk and work for the glory of God. Faith is spiritual and the only work that pleases God is spiritual work.
Work filled with faith in and obedience to the Lord! Then we will make our way prosperous.
Prosperity is not money. It can be some of your prosperity but there is no prosperity greater than the Lord.
 Matthew 16:26
26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Prosperity is having the seal of approval and the means from God, to walk and work and live far above the ways of the world. Isn't that how the world views prosperity and even success? Living above everyone else? Success is not notoriety! It may come with it, but real success is measured in grace from and fruit for the Lord.
Colossians 1:5-6
5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;
6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:
Let us continue studying this list of names with a critical eye. Not toward the people or the nations of Israel but toward ourselves. This book was written for our good. The records of people within it and their lives and actions have been recorded and preserved for our good. By the grace of God we have the complete manual for instruction on how to live in and for God through Jesus Christ with the power of the Holy Spirit in you.
Do you know why there are more women walking righteously before the Lord than there are men today?
Because men always try to put things together before they read the instructions!---True?
Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Knowing the Word and believing the Word.
Faith and obedience come by knowing God through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Faith and obedience came to everyone before the ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ through the very Word of Promise and Command by God. God's very Word to His People.
God's spoken Word is Jesus Christ in the Flesh and Spirit!
Jesus has always been with man from the beginning of time, for man. He has always been alive and active in the living, never ending Word of God!
These forefathers of Jesus were never without Jesus because they had the spoken and written Word of God to believe and obey! It wasn’t the Bible as we know it today, but they had the commandments and the Word of God from prophets and angels.
Wow! When we begin to comprehend the totality of the presence of Jesus Christ through the existence of man, we begin to examine their blessing and cursing with more personal attachment.
Every one of these people in the Holy Scriptures is an example of us or could be. Good or bad, past or present, one way or another! Oh, it makes it much more heart rendering when we realize we are no less kings than they, no less rulers of one or many, and our responsibilities are as great before the LORD as theirs was.
  Let's go on:
9 ----and Joatham begat Achaz-----
2 Chronicles 28:1-5
1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD, like David his father:
2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim.
3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.
4 He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.
5 Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter.
2 Chronicles 28:22
22 And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the LORD: this is that king Ahaz.

Let's get a clear picture of this in our minds and hearts. Ahaz new what faith and obedience was to God because he had seen and experienced the grace of God through his forefathers. Oh, but what makes a man turn away even when he has seen the truth.
1 John 2:16
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Sin is in every man and it takes a desperate will and crushing humility to keep oneself from rising in pride and lusting the flesh and lies of the world.
I want you to see what happens to people when their leader is royalty by worldly standards and not by Spiritual Standing. Just because your parents were blood bought born again spirit filled children of the King, doesn't mean you are in line for anything. You must have your own faith and your own need to obey the King in Heaven.
Justification is not inherited. Spiritual royalty is through the blood of Christ and you must be in Christ and He must be in you before you are a member of God's Royal family.
Otherwise we see the outcome. The flesh rules to its own demise and the demise of others. Most certainly the greatest tragedy is them who are the closest. Your children!
There is no guarantee they will answer the call of the Holy Spirit to come and confess and repent and commit their lives to God through Jesus Christ. But they will have a much greater understanding of the love and mercy and grace of God that can be theirs through faith and obedience to Jesus Christ.
Ahaz is an example of a child who would not listen and believe and his life was filled with misery, turmoil, and death for Himself and for the people he was responsible for.
9-------and Achaz begat Ezekias; (Hezekiah)
2 Chronicles 28:27
27 And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem: but they brought him not into the sepulchres of the kings of Israel: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.
2 Kings 18:1-7
1 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.
2 Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.
3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.
4 He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.
5 He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.
6 For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.
7 And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.
Oh, how beautiful these scriptures ring in the ears to a child of God. This is not fantasy, or ancient history that no longer has any meaning to anyone. To the child of God, it is the truth, and our hearts jump for joy as we read it. A child of God doesn't look at this as something they could have if they believe hard enough. The child of God knows it is already theirs when they humble themselves in faith and rise in obedience! It's not give a little, get a little. It's give it all and receive what has already been given.
How awesome it is that these names are set before us that we may be continuously reminded of the mercy and grace of God. How much He desires to give us copious amounts of whatever is needed to glorify Him through faith and obedience.
Can you be compared to any of these kings whose lives and actions have been recorded for us?
Can you see where you are knowing and growing as well as where you have come up wanting in the balance?
Every Word that is in the Bible is for our knowledge and growth, for coming to and keeping the Love of God through Jesus Christ in our hearts forever.

Let's Pray,
Our most Gracious heavenly Father I pray that each and every one who reads this sermon today will know in their hearts the truth of the will of God for us. It is His gracious disposition toward us who are faithful within a relationship to Him through Jesus Christ. Our Father wants to give us everything for His glory and as soon as we set our eyes on giving ourselves to others for Him, He pours out His blessings to and through us. We must remember Christ held nothing back. He stayed in constant communion with the Father and gave His all for us. In doing so He received all of God's glory for Him. We have looked into a few of the lives of kings in the line of Jesus and examined the drastic differences in their relationships with You, Father. And the outcome of those differences. I pray that the hearts of all our readers have jumped for joy at the truth of your desire and actions toward them who will faithfully walk and serve in obedience for your Glory.
In the name of Jesus we Pray! AMEN!

The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #10-121616

Matthew 1:6-8
6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Uriah;
7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;
8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;

As we open our Bibles to Matthew 1 this fine day, we will continue from our last sermon in verse 6.
Even David, a king chosen by God because of his righteousness in faith and obedience. Even David was not above the temptations of Satan in this world. When David was confronted with a willing participant he turned away from obedience and fell from the grace of God.
Once again, I must reiterate, he did not fall from being justified by faith or saved by faith as some prefer to say. He fell from grace through disobedience, but God never let him go.
Did he suffer from being out of the grace of God? Oh, my yes!
Did he suffer the consequences of his disobedience? Oh, my yes!
Did he suffer from his actions the rest of his life? Oh, my yes!
But he was also restored to righteousness in the sight of God through confession and repentance!
Being restored to good standing and grace of God does not mean you will not have to endure the consequences of your actions.
But it is far better to endure the consequences with the grace of God than to suffer them without Him! I’m going to say that again.

“It is far better to endure the consequences with the grace of God than to suffer them without Him!”
David's first child with Bathsheba was born sickly and David fasted and prayed for seven days, until the child died. One innocent life for another. However, David loved Bathsheba and God honors love. David and Bathsheba had another child because when God forgives, you are forgiven. God's mercy and grace are far greater than our sins from the past. Confession and repentance coupled with love and devotion, and we immediately see new light spring forth from even the darkest of days in our lives.
6-----and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Uriah;
Bathsheba was not mentioned to have confessed or repented although she did honor and serve her husband the king with loyalty.
Isn't it true we tend to choose sides in events like this. I can see where some would put all the blame on David and where some would point fingers at Bathsheba. Put the blame on her for David's fall from grace. This is how I read Matthews writing of the generation of Jesus Christ. He is holding Bathsheba in disdain for causing David's name and kingship to be stained. But the truth is they were both guilty of the same sin to start it all off.
However, these names in this list are here not because of their sins against God but because of confession and repentance as well as love and devotion not only to each other but to God.
God's blessing are poured out on the truly penitent man.
We all stumble but God is always there to lift us up when we cry out to Him.
From the first time we cry out to be forgiven and saved to the last time we cry out to be forgiven and restored, God never leaves us. He may seem far away, but His arms are never too short to gather in His lost sheep or His strays.
Solomon was the proof of God's mercy and grace toward David and Bathsheba. It displeased God because of their lustful sin with each other but was pleased with them when they turned back to Him. He blessed them with a son that would prove to be even greater than his father. How do you think he got there? Well just like David was taught by his father to know God, so was Solomon. David even commanded him so!
1 Chronicles 28:9
9 And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

Oh, how we should learn this and teach it to our children. Learn it first, because we must believe and experience the truth. Then teach it not only in word but in proof of experience.
Children don't often want to believe what they are told by their parents. It is in their flesh to disobey. But when you can prove what you say by your own life, it gets really hard for anyone to deny the truth.
So Solomon was next in line toward Jesus. Solomon learned to fear God from his father and learned the grace and blessing of God because he chose to follow the truth of what he had learned.
Why was Solomon so graciously blessed by God?
Do we really understand what righteousness is?
Righteousness is what you want and do for others. It is the faith you have in God that He will work in and through you for the good of all you are called to serve and help and guide and lift and bless.
True righteousness is pouring yourself out for others.
That is the righteousness of Jesus in and through you.
Righteousness is not how good you are by and for yourself. That's self-righteousness!
Why was Solomon so blessed by God?
2 Chronicles 1:6-12
6 And Solomon went up thither to the brasen altar before the LORD, which was at the tabernacle of the congregation, and offered a thousand burnt offerings upon it.
7 In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.
8 And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead.
9 Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.
10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?
11 And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:
12 Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.
Because he asked for wisdom to serve as king over God's people for God, God gave Solomon exceedingly, abundantly more than he could ask or think. (ref. Eph 3:20).
You see God pours Himself into every vessel that pours himself out for and to Him.
You cannot outgive God. The more you give to and for Him the more He gives to you for that purpose.
Jesus gave everything for us. That is why He and He alone will forever be the only truly righteous man that ever walked in this world. It is His gift of giving for us that works in us and through us. When we give ourselves to Him in Faith and for Him in obedience it is counted to us as righteousness. The righteousness of Jesus Christ in us! Hallelujah!  Amen and Amen!
Now some will say "Well we're not going to receive anything like Solomon from God because we no longer sacrifice thousands of animals. We only pray!"
Sacrifices were a show of obedience and desire to please and hear from almighty God!
But it wasn't the sacrifices that God answered it was Solomon's heart felt desire to serve God and His people justly. God answered Solomon in a big way because of the magnitude of his desire to serve in God's strength, not because of the magnitude of offerings he made.

Solomon's reign was in peace and prosperity, but even Solomon allowed sin through compromise to enter his kingdom. Solomon had many wives from pagan countries and allowed them to have their pagan altars and gods and religious practices in and around his kingdom.
1 Kings 11:1-13
Here is where we can read about the fall of Solomon. No one is above sin in this world if they choose to walk in this world instead of above it, with God.
What really is the outcome of sin in our lives?
Well, look at your children.
If they see compromise in your life. If they hear "Do as I say not as I do!"
If they are never taught by your actions to adhere to the Word of God, they will allow sin into their lives and each generation that follows will become more sinful and more compromising until they hear the call of the Holy Spirit and answer with their hearts to return to faith and obedience to the Word of God.

7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;
Rehoboam became king after Solomon and lived to fulfill the promise of God against Solomon for allowing pagan worship into Israel by marrying pagan woman.
Rehoboam did evil in the sight of God, but his son, Abia or Abijah turned back to God and God blessed him with the good promises He had made to his forefathers.
 2 Chronicles 13:21
21 But Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters.
7------and Abia begat Asa;
2 Chronicles 14:2-6
2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:
3 For he took away the altars of the strange gods , and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:
4 And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.
5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.
6 And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.
Yet even Asa's pride got the best of him, and he acted foolishly in the end to suffer in pain without the strength and blessing of God.
2 Chronicles 16:12
12 And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.

8 And Asa begat Josaphat; --------
2 Chronicles 17:1-9
1 And Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead and strengthened himself against Israel.
2 And he placed forces in all the fenced cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken.
3 And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim;
4 But sought to the LORD God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.
5 Therefore the LORD stablished the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat presents; and he had riches and honour in abundance.
6 And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD: moreover he took away the high places and groves out of Judah. 7 Also in the third year of his reign he sent to his princes, even to Benhail, and to Obadiah, and to Zechariah, and to Nethaneel, and to Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah.
8 And with them he sent Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, priests.
9 And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of the LORD with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people.
Jehoshaphat had many children, and gave them many riches. But the kingdom he gave to his eldest son.  Age is no reason to give honor.
8---- and Josaphat begat Joram; ----
2 Chronicles 21:5-7
5 Jehoram was thirty and two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.
6 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, like as did the house of Ahab: for he had the daughter of Ahab to wife: and he wrought that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD.
7 Howbeit the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and as he promised to give a light to him and to his sons for ever.
 8-------and Joram begat Ozias
Uzziah was 16 years of age when he was made king and he did what was right in the sight of the Lord for 52 years until his pride got the best of him.
2 Chronicles 26:16-23

Once again we see the flesh overruling the spirit.
The worldly appointment of royalty attempting to rise above the spiritual position of royalty through faith and obedience. He was stricken with leprosy and died a leper.
Now, Matthew has left out a few of the kings in line to Jesus, but he names the kings by way of record and influence on the kingdoms of Judah and the north Kingdom, Israel. The most memorable and influential.  All of them have a lesson to teach us by their lives but not all are needed to prove the earthly line of Christ Jesus.
As I stated when we began in Matthew 1, I will summarize all of the importance of these men and their actions when we finish our list.
Now, one would think so much time does not need to be spent on lists of names but it was these men whom Matthew named as proof and for our education.

Let's pray, Lord as we review the stories of servants to you, even the evil that sent your children on a path of sin and destruction. we must remember that nothing happens by chance. It is all set-in motion for the good of them that will receive the truth. It is all allowed to happen that them who God already knows will answer his call will come willingly, with a perfect heart towards Him. How much there is to learn that we as your children may be fortified in our faith and obedience. Until we join again to open your word for our good and your glory, bless us with a willing heart and a strong mind for the love of Jesus Christ. AMEN!

The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #9-121016

Matthew 1:6

The Gospels in Harmony  Sermon #9-121016

Matthew 1:6
And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

We will continue our sermon series with the second half of verse 6.
6------ and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;
Matthew emphasizes the position of David as king by repeating it.
Jesse begat David the king and David the king begat Solomon.
Solomon was also a king, but Matthew does not mention that. Why?
Perhaps we should consider how each became king.
David was a man after Gods' own heart. He was faithful and faithfully obedient even to the point of offering his life for God to work in and through him.
Solomon inherited the position of king from his father, David.
David became royalty through faith, Solomon became royalty because of David's faith.
Once again we see the promises of God coming to fruition and then being passed on to and through the faithful and obedient children.
Oh, but did I say sinless?  No!
Sin is in the flesh of all men and will always be present in the flesh of all men.
It is obedience in faith that keeps sin at bay.
This is why I always preach; faith and obedience cannot be separated.
Faith in God brings the desire to obey His Word. Obedience to His Word increases your faith. Increased faith brings more and greater works in obedience, which brings even greater faith and so on.
Obedience to the Word of God is what keeps you from going back to taste the forbidden fruit!
Would you rather be fed the goodness and fatness of the Lord or gorge yourself with the bad apples of the world!
Have you ever pictured in your mind the scene of Satan tempting Eve in the Garden of Eden?
Looking so sure of himself, speaking so convincingly and all but feeding the forbidden fruit to Eve with his own hands. Why it's only fruit and surely it can't be that bad?
Well it's only a little lie? It's only a little this or that, surely it can't be that bad.
It's only a little compromise in obedience that led to the entrance of all sin and death in men and women!
Think about that. Everything else Adam and Eve did and were doing was pleasing to God. But Satan convinced them to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil which God had forbidden them to eat of. Adam and Eve believed the lie and not the Word of God and fell from grace immediately. When their obedient faith in God as Lord and Master failed, they soon followed in action to disobey and what was once given to man to live forever in the peace and blessing of God and all His creation was immediately gone!
We must understand there are consequences to sin. All sin, great or small; once or often, past or present unless we humble ourselves before God and confess and repent, believing life is in faith and obedience to the Word of God.
"Oh but Pastor Freede, I thought we were learning about the genealogy of Jesus?"
Yes, we are. Don't forget Adam and Eve are in the line of Jesus also!
If we turn to Luke 3:23-38 we will read the genealogy of Jesus in reverse all the way to Adam and God.
So why am I bringing this into the mix now?
Well we are about to study verse 6----her that had been the wife of Urias;
Isn't it interesting that Matthew did not name her as he did Tamar, Rahab and Ruth.
Bathsheba was the wife of Urias or Uriah.
But why did Matthew not name her but made mention that she was another mans' wife before David and her begat Solomon.
Well perhaps if we look at the first three women and how they came to be placed in the line of Christ Jesus. Tamar was unjustly treated and had to fool her father-in-law to have sons by rights of the law.
Judah proclaimed she was more just than himself.
Rahab and Ruth both made their statement and confession of faith in God and acted upon that faith.
Both were taken in as though they had never been anything but from the line of Abraham.
But Bathsheba is a different story.
Most often we read of David's sin against God by taking another man’s wife and then arranging for that man to be killed in battle, that he may legally take his widow to be his wife.
However, what was Bathsheba's part in all of this.
If we read the story of David's sin with her, remember it was WITH her!
Bathsheba was the wife of Uriah the Hittite. A pagan by birth but by name a Jewish proselyte.
Uriah means "the Lord is my light."
His family history is not given other than being born from one of the pagan cities Israel was to overthrow in the promised land. Nun the less we can place Uriah in the position of not only being a believer in God but a Loyal servant to king David.
2 Samuel 11:2-5
2 And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
3 And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

Bathsheba on the other hand appears to have questionable motives.
Have you ever wondered why she was bathing in plain view of the king’s house?
Now stop and think. just how far away do you think this activity was taking place?
How far can the average person see, with clarity, the beauty of a person bathing?
Furthermore, verse 4 says he --took her; and she came in unto him,
Oh well excuse me but that sounds like a very willing participant!
Am I pointing fingers at who is to blame?
No!
But I am explaining one was just as guilty of adultery as the other.
However, it was David who continued in sin to cover up his actions that no one would know or suspect any wrong doing on both of their parts. Had nothing happened between them, David would have even ignored the gossip. But because they had sinned together, he was trying to cover for Bathsheba and himself. First by immediately calling Uriah in from battle so he would lay with his wife, and no one would be wiser. But when Uriah proved to be a loyal and trustworthy servant to David by not taking pleasure with his wife but sleeping on the steps of David's house; David had to come up with drastic measures.
What do you think would have happened if David would have confessed his sin to Uriah and to God at this point? Oh there's not much point in thinking about that, because king David was far too filled with the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life to even consider confessing.
It doesn't matter how high God lifts you on this earth, the sin that entered man will be with you until you shed this earthly body.
1 John 2:16
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
It is so easy to take our eyes off Jesus and turn them to the wayside where all the temporary pleasures of this world abound.
David the king was no different than any child of God.
Oh, maybe he exhibited his faith in greater ways and more often than 99.9% of Christians today, but the truth is he was just as capable of falling away from the grace of God as any other Christian.
Notice I did not say he lost his salvation. Being out of the grace of God is where most Christians are.
The difference between David and most Christians today is, He actually lived the power of God through faith in his life. Very few Christians today have ever experienced that power. Why?
Because, they refuse to close their eyes to the world, turn from fleshly desires and cast off their pride for humility and obedient service to God.
God’s grace is His unmerited favor towards us. We do not deserve or earn anything from Him, but through faith and obedience God pours His grace out for us to walk and work and serve in.
Get a handle on this folks. When you step out in faith to be obedient, God is there to give you everything you need to become obedient in a way that is greater than you could have ever imagined.
When you take your eyes off of Jesus and turn to the world in any way, God's grace is no longer available for you to live in.
God does not pour his grace out on the flesh to be used for the flesh!
God is Spirit and it is your spirit that receives God's grace. Your flesh is to come into submission to that spirit. God's and yours combined!
This is where most Christians walk in the weakness of false teaching today. You must be strong spiritually in relationship with the Word of God, Jesus Christ, in order to be walking and working in faith with power. When your actions become the outward truth of the Word than you are living in the grace of God. When you weigh everything against the Word and choose the Word as your guide in every situation and every conversation you will soon discover the power of God through His Holy Spirit in you.
When you choose to take your mind off Jesus to put it on the world, in anyway, you are walking and working alone. Even the blessings through God's grace, that you have previously received will soon wither away. If you can actually remain in a compromising state of religious activity and worldly activity, without a sense of guilt, then you never really were ever saved by God's grace through a truthful confession of faith and repentance of sin.
   Do all men sin? Yes!
Do all Christians sin? Yes!
But the difference is a Christian is saved by grace through faith and lives by the Spirit of God.
Even when we sin, we are guided back and shown the truth that we may confess and repent and return to the full standing of walking and working in and for the glory of God.
The unsaved live by the spirit of this world. They are the people who demand to be known as good people or even Christians, but prove by their actions and words there is no God in them.
2 Timothy 3:1-5
1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
God commands we do the same thing He does to people who choose to live in this manner.
He does not ask us to act any different than He does in any way!
God turns away from the ungodly. Even when they are His children. But it is by His grace we are called back to Him and restored to good standing with Him. We may not receive all the blessings that were once in store for us, but rest assured those blessings will come to your children of faith and obedience.

A child of God cannot walk in the power of God and walk in sin at the same time.
A child of God will not be blessed by God for living in sin without even an attempt to recognize and remove that sin from their life. Removing sin is not trying to cover it up. That's like sweeping dirt under the rug. Guess what folks, the dirt is still in your house and sooner or later it's going to come back out.
Now let's go back to David and Bathsheba.
David was a man after God's own heart. He was the most faithful and obedient son of Abraham. He was given the position of king over God's people because he was already royalty in spirit.
But David was still a man. Still embodied in the sinful, dying flesh of all sons of Adam.
Pride and lust in both David and Bathsheba led to more than sinful thoughts.
James 1:12-15
12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Oh, how true!
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

They both turned away from the grace of God by turning toward each other and giving in to sinful behavior. Once they had acted upon their lust then pride took over and attempted to sweep their sinful behavior under the rug so no one would suspect.
Well, you cannot hide from God. Adam and Eve tried that, and it didn't work for them either!
Death is sure to follow in the path of a sinner!
The death of the innocent as well as the guilty.
When you sit down to read the story of David, Bathsheba and Uriah in 2 Samuel 11 Take the time to notice that other servants were killed along side of Uriah in a place of battle they should have never been. David's order killed more than Uriah and all because he allowed his flesh to rule his spirit.
I believe we will stop at that most important point.
Most assuredly we will continue in our next sermon with the necessity of confession and repentance and the blessing of returning to the grace of God.
 Let's Pray,
Our most gracious heavenly Father, We thank you Lord for this time we have to unveil the truth behind these names that you have chosen to have listed for our edification. How often we pass over these names with little more than a glance and a vague remembrance of who they were. How powerful the truth is that revolves around and in and through each one that was recorded for us. How awesome it is that we can come to know them as men just like us and servants that we can strive to follow in faith and obedience. Their sins are the sins of all men but their faith and obedience as they walked and worked in the power of your Spirit of Grace is far greater than what we see today. Fill us with the desire to work in faith with power for Your glory.
In the name of Jesus we pray! AMEN!

Matthew 3:1-2

Matthew 3:1-2
1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

John the Baptist was the greatest evangelist that ever lived. Oh, there have been many to come after who have poured themselves out to the world, but John was the first. It would do well for all good pastors, preachers, ministers and evangelists to study his timeless words and fashion their ministries after his boldness and assurance of everything around him. His knowledge of who he represented in word and deed never faltered. Fear never persuaded him to speak a kinder gentler message to all who came near enough to hear.

Many of the Puritans from centuries ago stood behind their sacred desks and bellowed out the Gospel with the same fortitude and insight. They preached from their hearts because that is where the Holy Spirit abounds in the child and true servant of God.

As I have done so many times before, I find myself drawn to certain passages. Sometimes it may be only one verse. Sometimes several and sometimes it seems there are complete chapters that need to be examined for our greater good.

Reading through the Book of Matthew brought me to chapter 3 verses 1-2 where I just could not go on without rereading it several times. As I did God began to open these verses up to me so I must in all honesty preach through these verses in faith God will use this sermon to reach those in need of what is to be written.

Gods’ will is His gracious disposition toward us. It is His Holy Spirit given to us, at the moment of Salvation, that works in us to desire the truth, understand the truth and speak the truth for the good of others. And so, by the unction of the Holy Spirit in me I will draw to the surface the deeper truths in these verses.

Let’s begin,

1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

In those days—Oh and how are those days any different than now!

My dear brethren, all days are the same. The sun rises, the sun sets. People do the same things in general though modern technology has made many changes in how and when and what people do, but nothing has really changed. People are still people. All born in sin, all begin as a baby and live until they pass. Saved or unsaved, their bodies cease to exist, and their souls fly away to heaven or fall into the pit of hell fire and damnation.

Those days --were filled with work and worry, love and laughter, friends and foes, sickness and health, wealth and poverty, marriage and divorce, children, parents, grandparents etc, etc.

Yes in those days people were just people just like today.

In those days--there was much religion. Once again, I must announce there is no difference in our days. There are great organizations with set standards and rules of acceptance and broad interpretations and false interpretations of the Word of God. There are leaders of many religions and denominations who attempt to impress and impose themselves on the world around them. They claim to be Gods chosen servants while the have their minds, their hearts and their hands reaching for their own glory and prosperity. Yes, these days have not changed from the days of John the Baptist.

In those days—God chose to call and lift and guide and send those who were His elect. He empowered them to serve as His teachers and preachers and evangelists. They were all blessed to know the presence of God in the flesh as well as in spirit.

Oh, do you think anything has changed in this very day?

I can assure you there are servants of God in this day who are just as called, lifted, guided and sent. They are every bit as empowered to serve as teachers and preachers and evangelists because they too know the presence of God by His Spirit.

John the Baptist was the first to preach the coming of Christ by the Spirit of God. If you simply read your Bibles it is clear he preached from God given knowledge because he had not seen nor did not know who Christ was in the flesh when he began his ministry of repentance and baptism. But he knew by faith he was preaching the truth. He was preaching confession and repentance and the commitment of discipleship through the outward public demonstration of Baptism. We as servants of God preach and teach with the same faith because we have seen and known and live in the presence of God by the Spirit of God in the living Word of God, Jesus Christ. We personally know Jesus! And it is the Spirit of God in His Word that goes out and calls to all who will hear.

Romans 10:14
14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Here I must bring to light the truth about many so-called preachers today. Not long ago I wrote a Short and Pointed sermon about this very subject and my disappointment in the attitudes and lack of desire in many ministers today.

Most of what I see circles around money. Many pastors preach for a living instead of living to preach. Is this anything like John the Baptist? Was Johns attitude and desire for money? Was it for notoriety? Was it for attracting members for a religious sect?

Is that why he was called John the Baptist?

Sadly, the answer to most of these questions when set against today’s ministers is yes. Many preach for money. They either just do enough to keep the doors open and get paid for doing little of nothing just so a few locals can have a place close to go on Sunday or they advertise and compromise and aggrandize their religious organizations for the sake of membership and monetary growth. Is this what John did? No.

Oh, and let’s get something straight. John was not A Baptist. He was THE Baptist.  John was a Baptizer. He was not a member of or the founder of the Baptist Organization. Never did John preach the coming of the Lord and then pass the collection plate for his maintenance or for an organization he was affiliated with. John was the most humble and aggressive preacher that ever lived. Today’s ministers should study his attitude and desire to speak the truth of the coming of Christ without compromise, without adding or subtracting to it or from it. People need to be challenged with the truth about themselves. With or without Christ Jesus, the truth about their relationships with Jesus is for them.

In those days came---This is a significant event for a life changing event that was soon to happen. The world would never be the same after the physical presence of God the Son would walk among men. God’s Word was always with men but when His Word became flesh, and the eyes and ears of men beheld Him their lives changed. They became whole and filled with compassion for the lives of others. They began to be evangelists themselves. They began spreading the Good News of the promised Messiah. They confessed their sin and repented of their unholiness and gave their lives to and for Jesus Christ.

How many decades have passed and how many more have been anointed to teach and preach the coming of the Lord Jesus. How many more have poured themselves out beseeching the poor to come and listen and believe. There is a life-changing event soon to happen and it will be the last time it will happen. In these days there are servants of God who do all they can to reach the eyes and ears of those who would be added to the Book of Life.

In these days there are also those who do not look to John the Baptist as their teacher. John did not stand inside of four walls and preach a salvation message to a few devoted pew squatters once a week for a minimal amount of time. No John the Baptist went out where his voice could be heard.

Why do so many pastors refuse or take so little interest in getting their sermons outside of the four walls they preach in? If it’s a good enough sermon to preach inside it ought to be good enough beyond that. John the Baptist didn’t have the advanced audio and visual technology we have today. He did not have the postal service or even publishing companies to go to. He only had His voice filled with the truth from God for all to hear. He made himself visible and audible and God did the rest. Why do so many preachers fail to take that last step in obedience to their calling and preach from the rooftops. Send out weekly sermons for anyone and everyone to read. With all the social media outlets we have today there really should be no one in any community without knowledge of the Word of God being preached to and for them.

   In those days came---

John the Baptist came by command of God to not only preach repentance but announce the coming of the Lord.

What is the difference today? Everyone who is called to speak the truth of the Word of God is called to cry out to all who would here, “Repent of your sin for the great day of the Lord is near!”

Once again, many pastors hold this message near and dear in their sermons, but they lack the openness, the fortitude, the boldness of John to fulfill their calling. The world has convinced them they are doing enough. It is enough to stand in one spot and speak. It is the people’s responsibility to come and listen. It is their responsibility to come inside, to be in a designated Holy place to be oriented with the truth of God’s Mercy and Grace and Salvation through the Gift of His Son Jesus.

That is not what the Word of God is teaching us. Yes, the truth of Gods love for all mankind is to be tirelessly taught but not in a selfish, lazy, arrogant manor. John went out into the wilderness to preach. He didn’t start another church!

1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

The wilderness is outside the church walls!   Yes, preach from within but preach for all to hear! Take off your suit and tie and roll up your sleeves because there is work to be done. Get those sermons out in the streets where they will do some good for all who would be saved. Start a website, hit the air waves. A pastors’ sermons should be put into print and handed out. John not only preached but he encouraged others to follow his teachings. They went out and came back with others who were ready to hear.

A pastor’s voice is to be heard through his listeners actions!

I’m going to say that again,

A pastor’s voice is to be heard through his listeners actions!

Do you think it all up to the pastor to do the writing, the preaching, the printing, the going, and the handing out?

A Pastor’s work is discipling disciples! He is lifting followers to serve our Lord and Savior. Paul spoke of disciples he had inspired and made it clear their work was as important as his.

1 Corinthians 3:6
6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

Do you see? The burden is for everyone who is saved. Everyone who has been openly baptized and committed their lives to Jesus Christ. Yes there are always things within the church that needs attending too but the real ministry for most church attendees is helping to get their pastors sermons out into the wilderness.

Matthew 9:37
37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;

John was preaching in the wilderness because there is where religion had not taken control of the people. Or the people could come without fear of being rebuked by the religious leaders. How many people today have seen the hypocrisy in the churches and are seeking good sound Bible teaching outside. They are flocking to websites, audio books and sermons, group studies, etc, for the truth without anything attached. The wilderness is all around us but preachers need to stop trying to invite it in. They need to go out and be the voice of the Lord calling in the darkness for the lost to come home. That home is not a specific location of some religious organization with stagnant practices and redundant procedures.

Home is in the arms of our Lord and Savior through confession, repentance and commitment.

John was out in the wilderness where there were people who wanted to believe in holiness and righteousness but would not bow to the mondain hypocrisy of the religious leaders.

In those days--- the teachers of the law of God followed strict rules and regulations for how things were to be done to please God.

Today pastors have the freedom to bring the truth of the Word to the people anywhere and anytime. Yet most refuse to do anything more than what is generally accepted as the correct time for services and the accepted procedures for running a church. It’s a job. Not a service. They claim to be ministers but have forgotten who they minister to. A minister is someone who serves the needs of others. Ministers serve for God!

2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

John was ministering to God. He was chosen by God to announce the coming of His Son. He preached repentance, but he ministered to God. Yes, John was the greatest evangelist of all time. He took the truth out to the people and in doing so God gave the increase. Not to him but to Christ through him.

That is why I continue to write. That is why my sermons go out into the wilderness. --- for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

It’s time to step out of tradition, get out of the four walls of comfort and rise from the laziness of religious practice and regularity. Be like John the Baptist and announce the coming of the Lord. Go out beyond your comfort zone and God will bring the increase. Not for you, not for your religious organization, but for His Son, Jesus Christ. Amen!
